After 4 days of being unwell, Helen had her appendix removed last Thursday night. Last Monday she spent the day throwing up. On Monday evening the doctor diagnosed a stomach virus and prescribed anti-nausea medication. After two more days of stomach pains, I began to suspect it was not just the left-overs of a virus. So, on Thursday a.m., we went to see another doctor who sent us straight to the hospital. A day of poking, prodding and a CT scan followed and finally surgery took place at 10.00 p.m., just in the nick of time. Whatever fluids had already leaked had been contained in a fatty sack but when the surgeon went to remove the appendix, it disintegrated. Fortunately he could capture all the contents so they did not leak into her abdomen. This meant that she could recover more quickly than a patient whose appendix ruptured pre-op. She has now been home for 4 days and is much, much better.
